Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels is a program that provides nourishing home delivered meals to persons not able to care for their own nutritional requirements.

Preparation:

LeanneMeals are planned, prepared, and packed by Cowichan Lake Community Services staff. Special diets can be arranged, but individual likes and dislikes may not always be taken into consideration.

The meals are served in disposable aluminum dishes. Hot meals should be eaten upon arrival or promptly stored in the refrigerator for later use. Frozen meals are also available and should be kept frozen until needed. Extra soup is also available.

Delivery:

Dedicated volunteers pick up and deliver hot meals between the hours of 11:00 AM and 12:30 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Pre-arranged frozen meals are delivered at the same time.

There are no deliveries on public holidays, but we usually offer extra frozen meals on the last delivery day before the holiday. Volunteer drivers are always welcome to apply.

Cost & Cancellation:

The current price is $6.00 per meal. Notification of any increase in cost to the recipient will be given prior to the increase.

Meals may be cancelled by phoning 749-6822 anytime before 10:00 AM on the morning of delivery. Except in emergency situations, all meals not cancelled will be charged to the recipient.

Eligibility:

This service is available to residents of the Cowichan Lake area who, because of age, disability, or illness are:

  • unable to prepare adequate meals for themselves
  • have no one to prepare meals for them.
  • have inadequate cooking facilities.
  • have professionally defined health or social needs.

Funding:

The Meals on Wheels program is one of the services administered by Cowichan Lake Community Services. We receive funding from the provincial Ministry of Health, United Way, Legion #210 and Community Services self-generated funds.

Donations for the Meals on Wheels program will be gratefully accepted. Receipts can be provided for income tax purposes.
